The Rose Window Splendor and Symbol Painton Cowen PDF

This is a striking study in color of the rose window, both as a central feature of Gothic architecture and as a work of art in its own right, by an internationally recognized scholar of stained glass. In more than 300 photographs and line drawings, Painton Cowen catalogs the world’s best-known rose windows, found in cathedrals in Chartres, Reims, Strasbourg, Cologne, Florence, Siena, Palma de Mallorca, Santa Maria del Mar, New York’s St. John the Divine, and of course Notre Dame in Paris, as well as many lesser-known but no less astonishing examples. Every aspect of the rose window is discussed, including its possible origins in the south of Europe, its flowering in 13th-century France, the diffusion of styles across Europe, and modern reinterpretations, as well as the powerful geometry behind the designs and the meanings specific to individual examples. Cowen offers unique insights into the development and organization of the rose window and its central position in Gothic architecture and explores the greater meaning of the rose window in the contexts of numerology, scholasticism, and the concept of heavenly order. ‘’Gül Pencere: İhtişam ve Sembol’’ Gül pencereler gotik mimarinin ayırt edici özelliklerinden biridir. 300 adet fotoğraf ve çizimle birlikte bu katalog sayesinde Strasburg, Floransa, Siena ve Paris’teki Notr Dame katedrallerindeki en güzel örnekleri inceleyebilirsiniz.
